Arm

Arm Puppet Research - Jasmine H

Arm puppets are also known as human-arm puppets and two man puppets or a live-hand puppet. It needs two people to run one puppet because one person will be controlling the head, neck and mouth and the other person will run the hands and the body. Then the puppet can perform hand gestures which can also be seen as a form of hand puppetry and rod puppetry. One of the human hands will become the hand of the puppet itself but the the other will be inside the material.

They most likely originated during the cultural mindset at the beginning of the 20th century when puppets were being used for all audience ages and in experimental ways.

Good examples of this type of puppet is Fozzie bear from the muppets who was created by Jim Henson. Another example is Ernie from Bert and Ernie. The people manning the puppets are credited for their operational skills but interestingly, the puppets themselves are credited as their own characters.

In puppets that mouths can be manipulated, their jaws are made of flexible material so that the thumb can go underneath the jaw and the mouth can open and close; creating the impression that the puppet is speaking.
